We've engaged Robert Knapman to snap our happies on the day. He is a freelance event, portrait, documentary and LGBTIQ community photographer, having photographed parties, festivals, parades, conferences, live performances, launches, rallies, sporting events, corporate events and recently small weddings. He’s also spent many years working in HIV education, LGBTIQ community safety and community arts. Last year he held a solo exhibition of the Behind the Scenes’ photography project during Adelaide's LGBTIQ Feast Festival. This black and white photography project explores the lived experiences of LGBTIQ Australians and he plans to expand it into regional Australia this year.
What is Oxtravaganza
Come and celebrate Eastside Sydney and see all that the Oxford Street community has to offer, from day into the night. A stomping ground for outcasts, bohemians, and the queer community, whose influences delightfully combine to form a unique cultural hub. Oxford street has always been a major hub for creative expression. A neighbourhood built by quirky characters for quirky characters to come together and express themselves in any way, shape or form. From the iconic gay bars, to art schools and live music venues, artistic expression has always underpinned the Eastside community. A somewhat unconventional, and nonjudgmental space where queerness was not only promoted, but thrived. Whether you visit for an outrageous night out, a tasty meal or a shop on the main drag, there truly is something for everybody.
Join us on Oxford Street & surrounds this Saturday the 25th of February as we celebrate the rich and diverse community that makes up the Pink Mile. It’ll be a celebration of colour, sass and collectivism. There’ll be a string of free events within venues happening on the day. The strip will be transformed to highlight the unique character of the local businesses and happenings in the area. We’ll be showcasing bands whose career blossomed in the local venues, as well as colourful drag performances and localised art happenings. There’ll also be a window dressing competition for shops along Oxford Street, with cash prizes to be won. The whole event will be covered by our local media partners at GAY RADIO & BBR, who will be broadcasting live from Taylor and Oxford Squares. The event aims to bring together the eclectic eccentric Eastside community. All proceeds from the event will be donated to local LGBTQIA+ organisation, ‘The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.’

Dear Oxford Street & Surrounds businesses,
The Darlinghurst Business Partnership [DBP] would like to invite you to participate in a special event for Sydney Mardi Gras on Saturday 25th February 2015. Much like a 2017 version of “Shop Yourself Stupid”, our aim is to triple the average Saturday foot-traffic in the area – to remind people what an awesome strip Oxford Street is, full of culture, colour and character, with incredible food, drink and shopping.
The idea for Oxtravaganza is for all you local businesses to join in the festivities (and actively engage with your existing client-base via your usual marketing tools and social media accounts) by hosting an event inside or outside your business on Saturday 25th February. In order to facilitate this, the DBP is arranging Temporary Event DA approval from the City of Sydney that will allow for footpath trading (or other footpath activations) on the day.
Oxtravaganza will include random acts of drama on the street, live radio broadcasts from both Taylor and Oxford Squares and we are working with local venues and artists to ensure that there is a full programme of fun stuff happening on and off Oxford Street and its surrounds. The DBP will be spending considerable time and money promoting the day and participating businesses as well. The DBP is also extending Oxtravaganza to embrace a local charity as the area has always been community-minded and a haven for those that might need a helping hand from the harshness of life. To that end, Oxtravaganza has partnered with the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation who will be collecting donations on the day. They are also keen to engage with any business that would like to raise funds on the day.
Oxtravaganza is an official Sydney Mardi Gras event! It will appear as a featured event in the festival guide. Oxtravaganza.com will be populated with a list of events, so if you want to be involved, or put on an event in or out the front of your business - music, a performance, shopping specials, live contests – whatever, please contact us so we can include you in the event programme. If you want more info or have any other ideas for the day, get in touch. Collaboration is key.
Lots of love, DBP
Calling all creatives
If you want to be involved or help raise funds for BGF or put on an event (band, in-store, special) in or out the front (yes, businesses will be allowed to trade on the footpath) of your business, or in collaboration with a venue or business, please contact us so we can include you in the programme. All ideas welcome and we have a small budget to pay creatives for their energies.
